Fernando Santos: Cristiano Ronaldo Saving his Goals for Euro 2016
Portugal boss Fernando Santos has defended Cristiano Ronaldo following the star missed a problem in Friday’s 1- friendly defeat to Bulgaria.
The Actual Madrid forward, that has two times missed in the place for his club this year, saw his second-half effort saved by Vladislav Stoyanov because the visitors held on for any surprise win.
Portugal was not able to create its dominance from the match count from the inspired Stoyanov, but Santos states he’s no concerns that Ronaldo’s form will desert him at Euro 2016.
“Within the national team, and also the clubs where he’s been, Cristiano happens to be a reference – always worth 40, 50 goals per season,” Santos stated throughout a news conference. “He did not score [against Bulgaria] but he’s reserving his goals for that Euros.
“We produced many chances but we could not score. When we did not create then, yes, I’d be apprehensive.”
Bulgaria boss Ivaylo Petev was thrilled together with his side’s victory, which came thanks to a 19th-minute goal from 31-year-old debutant Marcelinho, but he’s backing Portugal like a potential champion in France this season despite its travails in attack.
“It had been an very esteemed game for all of us against an excellent opponent,” he stated. “We attempted to consider every chance to turn back Portugal attack using our counterattacks. However, Portugal had possibilities so we owe this victory to the goalie.”
He added: “Hopefully Portugal get so far as possible within the Euros. They can handle being champions.”
